Epicatechin

Epicatechin – Product Information

Epicatechin (also known as “(-)-epicatechin” or “minus epicatechin” when found in foods) is a bioactive flavonoid subgroup known as flavanols. Today’s epicatechin solutions are made with the batch-specific molecular weight derived from the product vial label.

While different foods contain varying amounts of epicatechin, dark chocolate contains the most, and the darker the better, with pure cocoa containing nearly 3mg per gram.

According to research, catechin is a potential future consideration for inclusion in supplements because of its potential ability to adhere to proteins, thus preventing the attachment of bacteria onto cell walls and prohibiting their destruction. [R]

What is Epicatechin?

Epicatechin is a promising research chemical that has been shown to have some intriguing properties. Flavanols are a subclass of flavonoids that have been studied for their potential health benefits. Flavanols are bioactive compounds in various foods, including dark chocolate, cocoa, grape seeds, green tea, berries, and apples.

Epicatechin is a promising compound that has the potential to support brain function, metabolism, energy, athletic performance, lean muscle, and promote blood flow, according to research. [R]

Epicatechin has a chemical formula of C15H14O6, wherein to calculate molar mass, one should compute the unified atomic mass units, which would be 290.26 g/mol.

However, epicatechin is still a chemical under investigation, and it is inadvisable to make epicatechin a dietary supplement. Buying this chemical must be for the sole purpose of research, and the responsibility to prepare stock solutions should be left to experts.

Potential Applications of Epicatechin

Over the past years, epicatechin has been the subject of several studies, and these tell us of the potential benefits of the synthetic drug:

• May Improve Muscle Growth & Promote Strength
• May Increase Nitric Oxide Production, Improving Blood Flow & Endurance
• May Enhance Insulin Sensitivity
• May Regulate Blood Sugar levels
• May Decrease Cholesterol
• May Promote Heart Wellness/Health

Despite these potential advantages of epicatechin, remember that no epicatechin supplements are safe to use for human consumption. The FDA does not support the sale of any type of epicatechin supplement.

May Support Lean Muscle Growth

Early human and animal clinical studies suggest that epicatechin may increase follistatin levels, a protein that appears to support lean muscle mass. [R]

Follistatin acts as an antagonist (inhibitor) of myostatin, a protein in the body that inhibits muscle growth.

The chemical compound also supports lean muscle by increasing follistatin levels and lowering myostatin levels.

A study conducted in 2021 discovered that adult clinical subjects aged 60 or older were given a green tea extract high in epicatechin for 12 weeks, without exercise. They had increased muscle strength and handgrip strength compared to the placebo group.

May Support Brain Function

A 2020 systematic review and analysis of epicatechin discovered that this stock solution could positively affect memory and executive function (the cognitive processes required to control and regulate behavior). [R]

A scientific review published in Nutrients in 2018 discovered that epicatechin helped older adult participants perform better on memory tasks, executive function, and processing speed. [R]

May Support the Cardiovascular System

Epicatechin may also benefit the heart and cardiovascular system.

Researchers discovered in a Dutch study that eating more epicatechin from foods was associated with a lower risk of dying from heart disease or other cardiovascular causes. The goal is to examine the relationship between dietary epicatechin intake and a 25-year risk of cardiovascular mortality. [R]

Other evidence suggests that epicatechin may have cardiovascular benefits due to its support for blood vessel endothelial lining, higher levels of nitric oxide (a vasodilator that increases blood flow), and angiogenesis.

May Support Metabolism and Energy

A 2015 study discovered that epicatechin stock solutions increased fat oxidation (fat burning) and decreased blood glucose after a meal. The effects of such a study were more pronounced in obese people. [R] The researchers concluded that epicatechin’s effects might be similar to the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise.

In addition, according to a peer-reviewed paper published in 2020, epicatechin may be beneficial in preventing the onset or progression of obesity-related problems such as metabolic issues, high glucose, and insulin resistance. [R]

How does Epicatechin Work?

Epicatechin’s stock solution has been shown to increase nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide is the molecule that commands blood vessels to relax, which is a process known as vasodilation.

Vasodilation describes the improvement of blood flow and circulation throughout the body. The process results in increased oxygen and nutrient delivery through the blood.

Epicatechin has piqued the interest of many researchers because of its ability to inhibit myostatin and thus upregulate follistatin.

Myostatin and follistatin are myokines that are produced and released by muscle cells.

Myostatin inhibits muscle growth by acting as a suppressor. Follistatin, on the other hand, promotes muscle growth by inhibiting myostatin signaling.

Myostatin and follistatin interact in a ratio; as follistatin levels increase, myostatin’s ability to regulate falls, because it is inhibited by the rise in follistatin, and vice versa.

Possible Researched Side Effects

Although no large clinical trials have been conducted to demonstrate the safety of epicatechin, preliminary evidence indicates a favorable safety profile with few or no side effects.

Epicatechin was found to be safe to use in a 2015 clinical trial in which healthy subjects were given up to 200 mg of epicatechin daily for 5 days. [R]

Some trials have produced comparable outcomes, wherein subjects tolerated epicatechin well and reported no side effects.

Green tea catechins (including epicatechin) have been shown in studies to alter the activity of drug-metabolizing enzymes such as Cytochrome P450. Furthermore, doctors and researchers have reported that green tea catechins interact with cardiovascular drugs and other circulatory drugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FDA approve the use of synthetic Epicatechin supplements?

FDA does not approve the distribution of epicatechin supplements since the research chemical is still under investigation. Despite the potential benefits of the drug, experts do not recommend taking epicatechin for human consumption.

What is the total molecular weight of Epicatechin?

Based on the elemental composition which is C15H14O6, the molecular mass of epicathechin would be 290.27 g/mol.

What are the different food sources for Epicatechin supplements?

Epicatechin, one of the most abundant flavonoids, is found in trace amounts in a variety of foods including apples, blackberries, broad beans, cherries, grapes, pears, raspberries, cocoa, and tea leaves.

What is the difference between Epicatechin and EGCG?

Epicatechin and epigallocatechin gallate (commonly abbreviated EGCG) are members of the same polyphenol antioxidant family.

They are both found in green tea, but each has unique properties.

While EGCG is the more potent antioxidant, epicatechin has different effects, such as increasing nitric oxide and follistatin levels.

Can you stack Epicatechin with other research chemicals?

Epicatechin can be stacked with laxogenin according to recent clinical studies.
